Rigid Rules, Inflexible Plans, and the Stifling of Language: A Cognitivist Analysis of Writer's Block by Mike Rose

"Rose" QDG (1,2,4)

  • A good essay will always grab the reader's attention immediately
  • You must have 3 or more points in an essay
  • Generate an outline for the essay
  • Prepare material, strategies, and plans to solve a problem
1.     The rule that always seems to give me trouble is catching the reader's attention. I never know if my writing is interesting enough so it causes me to doubt myself. This always keeps me erasing and trying to write new things.

2.  In Rose's study the blockers were following the rules of the algorithms. In his study he states that algorithms are precise rules that will always result in a specific answer. The nonblockers use some rules but they do not allow the rules to get in the way of their composing process. the blockers focus way too much on their rules and plans rather than letting their writing be more free.

4.     If a rule is restricting you from your free writing it’s not a good rule, because it should let you write freely without being restricted on your ideas. This rule is set it all if it is not allowing writing as you wished it’s a bad rule you should follow. This rule is heuristic.
